When & Where to Come
Your trial class will be held at:
Ortiz Martial Arts Academy
50/5 Ponderosa Parade, Warriewood NSW 2102
Please arrive 10–15 minutes early so we can get you settled in.
What to Bring
- Comfortable workout clothes (e.g. t-shirt and track pants)
- A water bottle to stay hydrated
- A towel (optional)
- Lots of energy and a great attitude!
If you decide to continue after your trial, we’ll guide you on uniforms and gear.
Class etiquette
Tips
- Be respectful to instructors and fellow students
- Remove shoes before stepping onto the mats
- Keep fingernails and toenails trimmed
- Listen carefully and follow instructions
- Most importantly – have fun and give it your best!

- Always be respectful on and off the mats.
- No foul language or profanity.
- Sexual Harassment of any kind will not be tolerated
- No filming is allowed during sparring or technical demonstration.
- Absolutely no coaching your children or other students during class or competition.
- Please trust in the work of our Instructors.
- No Electronic Devices On The Mat Will Be Tolerated During Class.
- If, Late Please Stand To The Side Of The Training Area Until You Are Welcomed To The Class By The Professor Or Instructor.
- Do Not Leave The Mat Area Without Prior Permission From The Professor Or Instructor.
- Don’t forget to check into classes at the front desk
- Training Gear And Gi’s Must Be Kept Clean.
- White, Blue or Black Gi’s With a Rash Guard Underneath Are To Be Worn During All Classes.
- (Visitors) Absolutely No Outside Affiliation Patches May Be Worn In The Academy.
- All Gi’s Must Be Patched With Ortiz Patches Front And Back.
- The Ortiz No-Gi Uniform Is Required For All No-Gi Classes. Females May Wear All Black Spats Or Yoga Pants With The Ortiz Rashguard (No Exceptions).
- No Shoes, Food, Or Drinks On The Mat At All Times. (Footwear Must Be Worn At All Times Outside Of The Training Area)
- All Metal Objects, Jewelry, Piercings, Necklaces And Other Items Must Be Removed prior to Training.
- Finger And Toe Nails Must Be Kept Clean & Neatly Trimmed For Everyone’s Safety.
- Keep Feet Clean, Dirty Feet On The Mat Will Not Be Tolerated.
- Please refrain from training while ill or with skin infections. (please be sure to bandage all open wounds before training)
- Please Come Prepared With All Your Training Gear, Rentals Fees Will Apply For All Students.
- Everyone Must Wear A Shirt Or Rashguard At All Times Inside Of The Academy. (Rashguards Are Required Under Your Gi)
- All Training Gear And Bags Must Stay In The Locker Room, Not In Or Around The Training Area.
- Workout Within Your Physical Limitations, Please Inform All Instructors Of All or Any Health Conditions You May Have.
- Address All Black Belt Instructors As Professor And Non Black Belt Instructors As Coach.
- Talking Should Be Kept At A Minimum During Training And Relate To Class Material.
- Everyone Must Stand Or Sit In Good Posture During The Demonstration Of Any Technique.
- Know Your Limits And Respect Your Training Partners.
- The Belt Represents Your Progress. Try To Keep It On At All Times. (Including Your Stripes)
- No One Is Allowed To Sit On The Mats While Class Is In Session.
- Enjoy the Class!

- Call Coaches “Coach” And Professors “Professor”
- Absolutely No Coaching Your Children Or Other Students During Class And Competition.
- Do Not Call Your Kid For Water Or Tie Their Belt During Class. The Coaches Will Teach Them How To Tie The Belt And Water Breaks Will Be Given During The Class.
- Trust In The Ortiz Program, We Have Professionals That Are Full Time Jiu Jitsu Instructors And Athletes, They Know What Is Best For Your Child’s Journey In Jiu Jitsu.
- Do Not Push Your Child. The Most Important Thing For Them Is To Have Fun On The Mat. The Journey Is Long And We Do Not Want Them To Give Up. The Coaches Will Always Require The Best Of Each Student.
- Be Patient And Positive, Always Praise Your Child With Words Of Encouragement After Class.
- Students Must Have The Ortiz Patches On Their Gis Front And Back.
- Students In Kids 3-5 Yr Old Kids Program Must Have Their Names On Their Belt (It Can Be Written With A Sharpie under the tag)
- We Recommend Every Parent To Drop The Student Off And Not Stay At The Academy Or Close To The Mat Area (for ages above 6 Yr Old). Kids Can Focus Better When The Parents Are Not Around.

- For Any Questions About The Event Please Contact The Tournament Organisation.
- For Any Question About Your Child Or Any Advice On What Division They Should Compete In, You May Contact The Academy.
- Absolutely No Coaching Your Children Or Other Students During Competition. They Need To Stay Calm And Use The Techniques That They Already Learned In Class.
- In Order To Keep The Team Environment And Have All The Kids Helping Each Other In Class. We Will Not Allow The Kids To Fight Teammates In Competitions. We Want To Teach The Importance Of Teamwork At A Young Age. Kids In The Same Division Will Flip A Coin To See Whom Advances or they may also agree on a winner.
- Respect Your Opponents, Teammates, Professors, Coaches, And Other Parents.
- Be Patient And Positive. Always Praise Your Child With Words Of Encouragement After Competition.
- Always Remember That The Most Important Aspect Of The Competition Is To Teach Your Child About Overcoming Fears, Facing Challenges, And Team Work. Winning Or Losing Is Part Of The Sport.

- No “Speciality” Gi’s May Be Worn. No Mixed Matched Colored Top And Bottoms.
- While We Respect Your Journey In Sports Jiu Jitsu, Please Be Aware Of Other Students Limitations That Do Not Compete When Training In Normal Classes. Do Not Go Too Hard On Them.
- Management And Head Instructor Must Approve Admission Into Our Competition Program.
- If You Decide To Commit To The Training Within Our Competition Program, You Must Commit To The Season. Failure To Attend Will Be Only Hurting Yourself And Your Training Partners. We Understand That Injuries Happen.
- In The Competition Training There Is No Toleration Of Sitting To The Side During Rounds Without Prior Permission Of The Head Instructor
- Tardiness Will Result In Consequences By Discretion Of The Instructor.
- Bring Your Own Training Gear. (I.E. Mouthguards, Tape, Towels, And Water Bottles)
- Respect Your Training Partners.
- Any Damage Or Theft In The Facility Will Not Be Tolerated.
- No Use Of Employee Only Facilities Or Supplies And Equipment.
- Filming Should Be Kept To Open Mat Hours Only. Ortiz Logo Must Be Displayed In Background. No Obscene Material Will Be Tolerated. Material Should Be Related To Jiu Jitsu training/instruction only. Please Advise A Member Of Our Staff Prior To Filming.
