Grading & Belt ProgressioN
Graduation Standards by International Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Federation (IBJJF)
At Ortiz Martial Arts, our grading system is more than just a ceremony—it’s a symbol of personal growth, discipline, and achievement. Each belt earned reflects hours of dedication, improvement in both technique and mindset, and an ongoing commitment to the martial journey.
Our Philosophy
We follow the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) graduation standards to ensure our students progress with integrity and internationally recognized credibility. Every student, from our youngest Mighty-Mites to our seasoned adults, receives structured guidance and personalized attention throughout their progression.
Belt Structure
Ages 3–15 (Kids & Teens Program)
We follow a colour progression system with age-appropriate skill development and character-building focus. Belt groups include:- Grey Group (4–15 yrs)
- Yellow Group (7–15 yrs)
- Orange Group (10–15 yrs)
- Green Group (13–15 yrs)
Ages 16+ (Teens & Adults)
For our adult and teen practitioners, belts progress as follows:- White → Blue → Purple → Brown → Black
- Beyond Black: Red and Black Belt (7th Degree), Red and White Belt (8th), Red Belt (9th/10th)
Minimum Time-in-Rank
We believe in earning each belt—no shortcuts. According to IBJJF guidelines:Belt | Minimum Time Requirement |
---|---|
White → Blue | 0–2 years (depending on prior rank) |
Blue → Purple | 1–1.5 years |
Purple → Brown | 1 year |
Brown → Black | 1 year (or Adult Brown Belt World Champion)* |
Promotion Process
We assess students based on:- Technical proficiency
- Sparring performance
- Class attendance & attitude
- Contribution to the academy culture
Not always—competition helps but is not mandatory. Effort, consistency, and growth matter just as much.
Only under exceptional circumstances aligned with IBJJF regulations. Most of our students progress step by step, building a solid foundation.
Grading events are scheduled quarterly, with formal invitations sent to eligible students in advance. Instructors monitor each student's readiness throughout regular classes and will recommend promotions based on consistent performance and attitude.
For kids, our approach balances structure with motivation. We use intermediate belts and colored stripes to mark progress regularly, helping young students stay engaged, excited, and confident

Customer Testimonials
“This is an amazing gym – been here around 3 years now and haven’t looked back. I train mostly Brazillian Jiu Jitsu but their Self Defence and MMA classes are amazing as well. The culture is great – everyone is super welcoming and friendly! Eddie, Thiago and Rafa are amazing teachers and ensures safety and community comes first; haven’t seen a single injury during the time I’ve been here. ”

Could not recommend this family run Jiu-jitsu enough.
My son has been attending now 3-6 days a week for a year and he absolutely loves it. He truly looks up to the teachers and has gained a great deal of confidence and education. The Ortiz family are the Best in the business.

There are plenty of Jiu Jitsu schools on the beaches, but only one has Edson Ortiz. A great instructor and role model who has not only produced world champions, but changed the lives of many of his students, including me. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and the Jiu Jitsu is world class.
